What Needs Doing?
I found the aluminium hub broken and the spokes just hanging
in the wheel. Back in 98 that was a known problem and we replaced the aluminium
hubs with steel ones to fix it. This Trike also had a small steel rim which was
rusty and a tyre with no rubber left. We will just replace the whole thing.
Ollie gets a brand new front wheel with a steel hub, alloy wide rim and a brand
new Tyre.
The fork bushes were made from plastic and didn't last long. I
will replace them with brass bushes which should last forever.
The steering head bearings are gone and I can feel a notch
with the wheel pointing forward, so steering head bearings are needed too.
The body on this Trike is bright blue glitter and not shiny
any more which does happen to Trikes parked out in the weather a lot. This
happens mainly to Gel-coat Glitter Trikes. The best finish has always been a two
pack paint job which looks very classy and does last for many years. To
match Ollie's Trailer it will be painted in two pack yellow.
The top box on this Trike is the old fashion German box which
was pretty small and not waterproof at all, Gary is making a new Topbox like the
new HS3 Trikes have got.
The mudguards look faded as well and still have the old German
taillights fitted. Anybody who owns a Trike with those taillights knows you have
to carry a pocket full of light bulbs with you and to make matters worse the
stop lights are hard to see. So Gary is making new mudguards which not only look
heaps better but also house the new style Perei lights which are much brighter
and I haven't replaced a bulb for 6 month now.
To make the Trike look like a 2003 model we are going to fit a
HD tank to the front similar to the one on the new HS4 Trike.
The 50L Petrol tank is cracked on the top brackets because
this model only had one bottom support on the torsion bar. When the tank was
full of petrol all the weight tried to pull the tank out of square and
eventually cracked the top brackets. I am going to weld up the cracks and fit
another bracket to the left hand side of the tank which I have done to many
trikes and the problem disappears.
The seats on this Trike are black Highway seats and are in
perfect condition, better than my seats in any case.
The gearboxes back in those days had problems jumping out of
gears after a while and some had the wrong gear ratio which made them rev higher
than the newer boxes. Leon is going to rebuild the
Gearbox and free up the first gear which is still blocked in this Trike.
Because the motor is coming out anyway I will have a look at
the clutch and throw out bearing.
The rear brakes shoes should still be good, but I will open the
drums anyway and make sure the axle seals are ok.
The running boards are faded black and they get sandblasted
and a new powder coat to match the rest of the new Trike.
The throttle grip is the old one that you needed two hands to
get full throttle. That gets replaced with a new fast action Magura Grip which
makes the throttle cable last longer too. Any rustic looking nuts and
bolts get replaced and the whole trike gets a good look over while in pieces.
This is the time to do it.
And should be it.
Keep an eye on this story and we will update the web-page step
by step until Ollie and Margaret ride home to South Australia on the new yellow
HS3.
