The Trike we are using as a donor to build Ollie and Margaret
the Trike they wanted over a year ago now is a 1998 model HS3 Bon Trike which
used to live in Alice Springs and then moved with the same owner to Canberra.
It has the original small rear wheels
(235x15) and a small front wheel with aluminium hub, worn
steering head bearings and broken fork bushes. The gel-coat was a bright blue
flake but is now very dull. It does have running boards, a top box and a big
petrol tank, but the tank is cracked.
In 98
the Trikes had the smaller German top boxes and no glove-box (neither of which
are real water proof, and I find the glove box
a total waste of fibre glass... but that's just me.)
The front wheel hub was broken because the aluminium hubs just
didn't handle the roads here in OZ. On later models they got replaced with steel
hubs and we had no more problems.
The 50L Petrol tank on the donor trike is cracked on the top
brackets because the tank only had one support bracket sitting on the torsion
bar. On later models the tanks had brackets on both sides which stopped that
problem.
The Trike must have spent most of its life outside and looked
pretty neglected when we bought it. The gel coat looks
dull and is bright blue metal flake…. not that there is anything wrong with
that colour!... just that it isn't the look Ollie and Margaret were after.
The Trike wasn't knocked around or badly treated just in desperate need
of TLC which makes it perfect for a rebuild.
The motor has done less than 25,000km and sounds real nice and
the rest of the trike is in pretty good nick.
