Step 5
Gearbox
The Gearbox has been to
Leon and is now back. Nice and shiny. The most important changes have been made
inside the gearbox.
Leon changed the ratio in
fourth gear to make the trike rev lower while cruising, specially with the motor
getting a few more horses under its belt. All the gears have been back cut so it
doesn’t jump out of gear, which is a problem we had in the early days. New
wheel cylinders and new wheel bearings have been fitted, new axle boots and a
fresh powder-coat on the axle-tubes make it all look like new.
At least we know now
Ollie will have no gearbox trouble in the future.
Tank
The
tank has been repaired too and has had the other bracket welded to it so it won't
break on the top again. With a fresh coat of paint the tank looks like a new one
and will do its job from now on without any more problems.
Motor
The motor has been out and I pulled all bits and pieces off it
so it can go to Leon as well. This motor is a 1916cc but with the wrong
Carburettor and the cheap Brazil Valves in the heads. Leon is going to make this
one go the way it should.
When finished the motor will have a Kedron single carbie and
the heads get worked on too so the motor can breathe and do its job much more
easy. Because the heads are off anyway we are going to fit stainless steel
pushrod tubes; the standard ones rust easily and look terrible after a few
weeks. The tubes don't cost much and will always look good, but this is a job
only worth doing if you are going to take the heads off anyway... otherwise it
would be a costly exercise.
Leon has done a few motors now with this set-up and they do
work. Barry and Max rang me a few weeks back and told me
they towed trailers on the way home from Mudgee and the Harley's couldn't catch
them going uphill or anywhere . That sounds ok to me, you try that with a
standard Brazil 1600!
Anyway
here are some photos of the motor complete and the other one with all bits
removed.
Step 6
All the fibre glass parts have gone to the painter and I had a
look at them yesterday. They have all been 2 pak undercoated and ready for the
finish coat in Saffron yellow, which should look fantastic.
Here's a little tip regarding painting a trike body.
- Make sure you undercoat in 2 pak before painting the top
coat in 2 pak, because if you don't, you will get stone chips very easily
with the original colour showing trough. The undercoat is the bridge between
the old and new look.
It all has to be done in a spray booth at the right
temperature and in the right air humidity. Don't cut corners here because in a
few years time you will be able to tell the difference and the body is what you
see most on your trike and it is what people admire first.
